First Year Writing

First-year writing at Penn State presents students with a variety of choices and opportunities to engage with the study of rhetoric. Students may choose from a number of courses, including three versions of English 15, as well as two Honors versions of first-year writing. Each course presents students with an intensive, rhetorically based experience in reading and writing that prepares students to understand the communications that surround them and to succeed in their own communication efforts. All first-year writing courses focus specifically on analyzing verbal and visual texts (reading) as well as on producing such texts (writing)—always in terms of traditional rhetorical principles.
